A patient reader is a reader who’s willing to read the Bible again and again and again and to mull it and to meditate on it and to listen to it over and over and over again. Love is patient, and loving readers, spiritual readers, have to be patient. The poet Robert Penn Warren said the best reading of a poem doesn’t happen the first time you read the poem or the tenth time you read the poem. The best reading of a poem comes when you read it for the hundredth time. The more familiar we are with the text, the more familiar we are with the poem, [or] the more familiar we are with scripture, the better readers we become.
